Is Panera Bread Actually Healthy?

Quinoa bowls, avocado topping, Green Tea and more!

Some say that Panera Bread is their holy grail, while others don’t see what the hype is all about. Yes their branding and bright green color schemes convey health but- is it really acceptable to eat fast “healthy” food?

Although Panera portrays this elite and healthy image, the chain has sandwiches that are no better than what you’d find at McDonalds. For example the “Sierra Turkey” on Asiago cheese focaccia has 920 calories, 49 grams of fat, and 1,900 mg of salt. Even the vegetarian option, tomato and mozzarella on ciabatta bread, has 770 calories, 29 grams of fat, and 1,290 mg of salt.

To put this in perspective, a McDonald’s double cheeseburger has 440 calories, 23 grams of fat, and 1,150 mg. of salt. If you’re opting for a salad, also beware—while their calorie counts are relatively low, the amount of salt, even before dressing, can come close to 1,000 mg.

Everyone has seen the viral TikTok of the Panera worker pulling the pre-packaged mac-n-cheese out of the freezer and warming it to serve to a customer. Not much different than the techniques of other fast food chains.
